Merriwa, an Aboriginal word meaning "a good place"
The suburb was originally named Hester in 1980 after early landowner Thomas Hester, but Australia Post opposed it due to a conflict with an existing town of the same name. Instead, the name Merriwa, meaning “a good place” in Aboriginal, was approved that same year. Hester’s name is still reflected in Hester Avenue, which marks the suburb’s southern boundary.
Merriwa is a northern coastal suburb of Perth, Australia, located 36 kilometers from the city center. It is primarily residential and falls under the City of Wanneroo local government, featuring two retirement villages for RAAF members.
